Over Christmas, we got a new desktop at home and we decided to ditch Windows and use ubuntu instead. It's a decision I wish I could make at work too. Recently, we received new laptops at work which are fairly impressively speced (though we we heard that each cost around $4k we weren't so impressed). Unfortunately, we continue to be tied to Windows and lately, I've been getting a bit sick of it. After burning 45 minutes waiting for Windows to startup only to have it hang (then the recovery procedure hang), you've got to ask, why do we persist in using software when there are better alternatives available?
I've recently taken to following the ubuntu planet blog page and have found the information provided on the ubuntu wiki to be not only helpful, but also interesting to browse. I am doing my bit to work towards resolving the number 1 bug in ubuntu but think it would really help if companies would do the same.
I understand that there is a significant shift in IT department mentality for such a change to occur, especially if significant investment has already been made into existing infrastructure and customisation of Windows environments. However, there is a point when you just have to question whether it is right decision to continue to invest in closed source, proprietary software or change your approach to being open and free. So if you haven't already, I encourage you to check out ubuntu and do your bit towards supporting open and free software.
