Ubuntu 11.10 On Mac - Take 1

So after using ubuntu in a virtual machine at work for several months now, I've decided to try it out on my Mac. I've encountered a few problems along the way and will document them here for everyone's benefit:
  • Turn the sound on before rebooting when trying to boot from a disk
  • Hold down the alt/option key when the startup sound chimes
  • Select the startup disk to boot
  • Note: Do not use the method of selecting the startup disk through OS X - for some reason, this seemed to cause the machine to 'hang' on a grey screen following the restart for ~15 minutes. During this time, the keyboard is unresponsive and you cannot eject the disk. If this happens, do not panic - just be very patient and wait. Once the keyboard responds, eject the disk and boot from the Mac OS X installer disk (again waiting for ~15 minutes if required). Once the boot disk loads, change the startup disk back to the internal hard disk
  • If trying to use the 64 bit ubuntu installer, you may encounter a problem whereby the following is displayed:
  • 1. 2. Select CD-ROM Boot Type:
  • If this happens, you will need the 'alternative' mac specific ubuntu release which can be obtained from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/oneiric/release/ where oneiric can be replaced by the ubuntu release name for the various releases

  • I am currently downloading this alternate release and will post an update on my progress...
